Hanging Drapery like an Interior Designer

Are you looking to refresh your home or add some privacy to your space? Today, we delve into the world of drapery, exploring the art of hanging curtains to elevate your space effortlessly! Curtains aren’t just functional; they're a powerful tool to enhance the aesthetics of your room. With the right technique, you can transform any space into a haven of style and comfort. So, let's dive into the details of mastering the art of drapery like a pro.

Fabric

The journey to perfect drapery begins with selecting the right fabric. The fabric not only determines the aesthetic appeal but also affects how the curtains hang and drape. Opt for lightweight fabrics like linen or cotton for a breezy, casual look, ideal for spaces like living rooms and bedrooms. For a more formal ambiance, consider heavier fabrics such as velvet or brocade. These lend an air of sophistication and luxury to any room and could potentially add a level of privacy.

Measure Twice, Hang Once

Before you even think about hanging your curtains, ensure you have accurate measurements. Measure the width of your window and add a few extra inches (8-10”) on each side to allow for proper coverage and fullness when the curtains are closed. For the length, decide whether you want the curtains to hang just above the floor for a modern look or pool slightly for a more luxurious feel and ensure to hang the rod (for outside mount) a few inches from the ceiling. Remember, precise measurements are key to achieving a polished, professional look.

Account for amount of fabric touching (or not touching) the floor and subtract slightly if using rings.

Mounting Options

When it comes to hanging curtains, the mounting option plays a significant role in the overall aesthetic. There are three primary mounting styles: inside mount, outside mount, and ceiling mount. Inside mount involves hanging the curtain rod inside the window frame, creating a clean, streamlined look. Outside mount extends beyond the window frame, adding visual height and width to the window. Ceiling mount, as the name suggests, involves mounting the rod to the ceiling, ideal for elongating the walls and creating a sense of grandeur and best for windows that span an entire wall.

Consider Length and Fullness

The length and fullness of your curtains can make or break the overall look of your space. For a tailored, modern look, opt for curtains that just graze the floor. If you prefer a more dramatic effect, allow the curtains to pool slightly for added flair. When it comes to fullness, aim for at least 1.5 to 2 times the width of the window for a lush, luxurious look. This ensures the curtains have enough fabric to create beautiful folds when closed, adding depth and dimension to the room.

Twice the fullness and length just kisses the floor.

Don’t Forget the Hardware

Last but not least, don’t overlook the importance of quality hardware when hanging curtains. Invest in sturdy curtain rods (1.5-2” diameter) for lengths longer than 60” and brackets that complement the style of your space. Consider decorative finials or rings to add a touch of elegance and sophistication. And don’t forget about the curtain hooks or rings, which play a crucial role in how the curtains hang and drape. Opt for durable, high-quality hardware that will stand the test of time and enhance the overall look of your drapery.
